About

This October, The Hepworth Wakefield will present a new sound-art exhibition by Shenece Oretha – the culmination of the multi-disciplinary artist’s residency at the gallery.

During Oretha’s yearlong residency she explored the relationship between sculpture and sound in modern British art. This included how artists such as Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore engaged with music, musical instruments and ideas that have a ‘sonic resonance’ in their work. Oretha researched artists and works of art that echo with places beyond Britain as well as those that make connections to different times, music and instruments.

Inspired by Hepworth’s comment, ‘I know what is happening not by what I see, but by what I hear’, Oretha listened to and recorded sounds from sculptures in Wakefield’s Permanent Art Collection using sensitive surface microphones. Using these recordings, Oretha has created a multi-channel sound composition that will be heard across several specially devised speaker-sculptures in the exhibition, arranged amongst the works of art that inspired her composition. Featured in the show will be around 30 works from the collection, including several Hepworth and Moore sculptures alongside works by Bernard Meadows, Derrick Kitchen and Henry Cliffe. Also in the exhibition will be unseen sculptures from Wakefield’s collection by unknown artists of the global majority, many of which originally belonged to Hepworth herself.

Shenece Oretha is undertaking an artist residency with The Hepworth Wakefield as part of the 20/20 project, led by the UAL Decolonising Arts Institute and supported by funding from Arts Council England, the Freelands Foundation and University of the Arts London.

Exhibition entry is £12 / £10 / FREE for Members, Wakefield District residents and under 18s. Ticket includes entry to all our gallery spaces on the day of visit.
